OUR PROJECTS

Due to the uncertainties of Covid and the need to protect all our volunteers, we cancelled all our group events for 2020 in the hope that these could run in 2021. However, who would have thought that we would be in the same position of having to cancel the events again, but we remain positive and committed to their rescheduling for 2022 and as such we are putting all our efforts into making 2022 the best ever

So what else can you look forward to in 2022

International Women’s DayTuesday March 8th 2022 White Swan Hotel, Bondgate Within, Alnwick

Following the success of the 2020 event, we will be holding another International Women’s Day on the global day of March 8th from 7.00pm at the White Swan Hotel. Tickets are £30 including a three-course meal and welcome drink.

Alnwick has been torn apart by Covid but we have kept going as a community, and women in particular have rallied round and brought support to those people in greatest need, who, through no fault of their own found they had to isolate or struggled to make ends meet and with little opportunity to see friends and family felt vulnerable. Many women and carers in Alnwick became superheroes organising things like prescription deliveries, community larders, meals for schoolchildren, gardening, litter-picking, nursing and caring and so much more. We want to honour those women who have gone that extra mile and we want you to nominate who you feel deserves the recognition at this very special event.

The nominations can come from any sector of the community and our impartial committee will select the top 5 nominations – those women will be invited to attend the event with a guest to receive their award and enjoy the evening for free.

During the evening along with the award presentations there will be entertainment, poetry, music and dance along with keynote speakers.

To make your nomination or to book your tickets please contact Linda Wood-Mitchell alnwickcommunitytrust@gmail.com

Queens Platinum Jubilee    Sat 4th June 2022

JUBILEE FLOAT PARADE 2022 CANCELLED

Alnwick Community Trust (formerly Investing in Alnwick and Loving Alnwick) are sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances and the Town Councils lack of support/delays in responding to requests for a joined-up approach to the celebratory Jubilee event; that we have had to cancel the proposed and part-planned Float Parade through the town. We realise this will disappoint many people looking forward to the Parade including ourselves due to the amount of work undertaken to date.  Thank you to residents and partners for your support and understanding for us needing to take this difficult decision.

We do however continue to plan for other events in 2022 and look forward to sharing information on Arts and Crafts events, International Women’s Day, Baltic Bus, Percy App, and the Family Picnic Day along with many other projects in the pipeline.

Column Field Centenary Celebration + 1            Family Picnic Day

 Sat 6th August 2022

This event should have happened in July 2021 to commemorate 100 years of community use of the Column Field so now it will be 100 years + 1 as we are not going to let Covid spoil our fun.

The event will take the form of a family picnic day, free entry. Just come along with your picnic and listen to some traditional jazz in the summer sunshine (fingers crossed).

ON-GOING PROJECTS

As we move out of lockdown some projects will be reinstated – see below:

PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE

Alnwick Lion Trail

We recently secured funding to develop a Percy Lion Trail App for use with IOS phones. The trail will guide families around Alnwick town. At specific Lion POI (Points of Interest) e.g. the Tenantry Column lions and up to a further 15 POI – our Percy lion will be animated to wave or roar or just smile. The App is aimed at young families but will be of interest to all age groups.

Additionally local shops can also choose to display/hide a knitted Percy Lion and the user of the App could gain discount wherever they spot Percy.

Alnwick has been torn apart by Covid, with many families and businesses struggling with the balancing act of working from home, home-schooling and amusing young energetic children in a semi-rural area with few outdoor activities open or safe accessible play schemes, especially during Covid restrictions. The result being increasing frustration, obesity, diabetes, and worrying rising levels of depression amongst young people.

There is a distinct changing nature of disadvantage in the town and more attention is being given to mental health and the need for family units to re-engage with their community through regular outdoor exercise to improve their well-being, mental health, sleep and attention levels. By involving young people in the project we hope to provide both a healthy activity as well as an artistic opportunity to developing the App’s design, publicity, trials, monitoring launch activities.  By involving the business community in hiding/displaying a lion, it may also help to boost trade following the impact of Covid and help to point tourists around the town into shops and cafés.

Lighting up the Tenantry Column

This has been a project that we have been seeking to support for some time now. We have recently secured some funding to enable us to pursue this with Northumberland Estates and we hope that in the not too distant future we will see the Tenantry Column lit at special times of the year. Watch this space.

Street Gym

We are keen to develop this project to enable the town to have its very own street gym which enables anyone in the town to take part in a workout in the fresh air. A suitable location is still being explored.

Accessibility Map

An Accessibility Map has been developed to help those people with mobility issues (perambulators, wheelchairs, motor scooters etc) to enable them to easily navigate their way around town and thus avoid cobbles and steps. The map is available from the Tourist Office at the Playhouse.

Alnwick Men’s Group

for lonely or isolated men who enjoy the company of other men in a warm and friendly environment for a coffee and chat, to listen speakers, go on a day out, have lunch, quizzes, play board games etc, now meets every first and third Monday of every month at the White Swan Hotel, Bondgate Within, Alnwick. 10.30 – 12.30  (except 3rd Jan 2022 when the hotel is closed) 2022 sessions start again on17th Jan.

Just come along if you think its for you, there is no charge. You will be made very welcome.

We also hope to start a Women’s Group – if you would like more information about that or the Men’s Group contact Linda on 07592 401521

Art Attack

We have a very pretty town especially when all the shops are busy and thriving, however sometimes when a shop becomes vacant, it doesn’t look good with post scattered across the floor or whitewashed windows, so we thought it would be a good idea to give local groups and individuals an opportunity to display their art, crafts or photography work on screens in the windows as an alternative to an empty shop front.

Any business wishing to take up this offer should contact Adrian and Ginette on ade_gen@hotmail.com

Litter-picking

We have a willing group of volunteers who are regularly out and about litter-picking around the town. I know we shouldn’t have to do this but the majority of us have pride in our town and want to keep it clean and tidy. Thank you to everyone who helps to keep our town tidy. If you would like to be part of our Litter-picking team please contact Linda at alnwickcommunitytrust@gmail.com

Alnwick Lion Trail

We are currently seeking funding to develop a Lion Trail App for use with IOS and Android phones. The trail will guide families around Alnwick town. At specific Lion POI (Points of Interest) e.g. the Tenantry Column lions and up to a further 15 POI – the lions would appear to come to life through animation on their phones, to entertain the families whilst out on a walk. Local shops can also choose to display/hide a Lion (footprint or soft toy) and the user of the App could gain a  ‘puuuur’centage discount wherever they spot the Lion.

Good Food Guide 2021

For some years now we have produced the Good Food Guide which documents all the eateries in Alnwick. Residents, visitors, B & B’s, Coach companies etc can get a copy from the Tourist Information Office. If you are a new venue that would like to be included in the handy leaflet please contact Linda on 07592 401521

Monday Matters

The Monday Matters have moved to the Community Centre in Longhoughton, meeting on Monday mornings (except Bank Holidays) between 9.30 and 12.00

Our aim is to encourage interest in the traditional craft of rag rugging which involves a variety of techniques, using a wide range of mostly recycled materials, to create all sorts of items, not just rugs! In ‘normal’ times, we also undertake demonstrations at various local shows and arts events

The ‘Matters’ all work on their individual projects and we’re happy to help anyone who comes along to get started.

There is a small charge, £5.00, to cover our room hire and other costs.

If you’re interested come along on a Monday morning and see what we do.

For more information about us have a look at the Monday Matters entry on www.sheeptales.org or contact Liz on 01665 606197 or 07715 313989
